I recently dropped a weight on the top of my foot. Upon checking into the Emergency Care Clinic and receiving X-Rays, I learnt that I broke the 2nd metarsal bone. I didn't crush any surrounding bones or tissue. There was only one real point of impact, which resulted in a clean break with no displacement. I was fitted with a removable air-cast (closed toe) and crutches. I was asked to stay off of it for 6-8 weeks.
