This is most likely beetroot-related stool discoloration, which can appear red, pink, purple, dark brown, or even blackish in some children. Since baby is active, playful, comfortable, and the color looked pink/red on pressing, it is reassuring and less suggestive of bleeding.
Next Steps
Observe for 1–2 days and avoid beetroot for now. Please see a pediatric doctor if stools remain black/tarry even without beetroot, or if baby develops vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, weakness, poor feeding, pallor, or blood in stool.

Most likely this is due to beetroot pigmentation and not internal bleeding, especially since the stool shows pink/red color on pressing, the baby is active, playful and otherwise well. Beetroot can sometimes make stool appear red, dark brown, blackish or mixed green depending on digestion. Internal bleeding stools are usually jet black/tarry with foul smell and the child often looks unwell. Just observe for 1–2 days, give normal diet and fluids. If repeated black stools continue without beetroot intake, fresh blood appears, vomiting, abdominal pain, lethargy or poor feeding develops, then consult your pediatrician.
