It is usually well known that physical injuries or trauma causes back pain but depression is an illness that involves the body, mood, and thoughts and that affects the way a person eats, sleeps, feels about himself or herself, and thinks about things. Hence, this is a commonly asked question in medical practice. Back pain is a common problem that affects most people at some point in their life, but not many people associate it with depression. This maybe because most people associate depression with emotional symptoms, but many people with depression do live with chronic pain or other physical symptoms too. These could be: headaches muscle aches joint pain chest pain, easy fatigue-ability and back pain. Although chronic pain and depression are two of the most common health problems that health professionals encounter, only a handful of studies have investigated the relationship between these conditions. These studies have proven that pain and depression are closely related. Sometimes pain and depression create a vicious cycle in which pain worsens symptoms of depression, and then the resulting depression worsens feelings of pain. One theory proposed as to why depression can cause back pain is because of the stress associated with it. Everybody feels stress in different ways. Stress is sometimes accompanied by tensing back muscles, which usually trigger low back pain or make it worse. Same neurochemicals implicated in depression also mediate pain modification in the nervous system. Hence depressed patients can perceive pain more
