Missing of unilateral (one side) tooth is rare.  There is high chances that permanent tooth will be there in your upper (maxillary) jaw bone and can do harm to other teeth, including baby tooth. If permanent tooth is absent, baby tooth is preserved for as long as possible. Its life is usually 35-40 years. Permanent tooth has long roots, thus better support as well as better aesthetics. This is why permanent tooth are preferred.
