Since 1992, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended that babies always be placed on their backs. Before this recommendation, more than 5,000 babies died from SIDS(sudden infant death syndrome) every year in the United States. Now, with the decrease in the number of babies sleeping on their stomach, the deaths from SIDS have declined to about 2,300 per year. Between the ages of four and seven months, however, you may notice your infant beginning to roll over when placed to sleep on his back.It is still important to continue to place your infant to sleep on his back. You should also double-check that there is no bedding close to the baby that he could get stuck in if he rolls over.
