Gender and sexuality have been come to be understood and recognized as fluid terms, wherein one can fall anywhere between the two ends of the masculinity-feminity spectrum. Gender is understood better in the light of one’s personal and social experience of being a male or female. Trans men and women can similarly have varied experiences of the same. It is important how they conceptualize and contextualize their experience rather than how a third person feels about them. Transgenders in particular often feel conflicted about their biological sex, and thereby often with the gender roles that come with it. HRT and SRT are options for those trans individuals whose experience of their biological sex, their existing bodies cause significant distress and disturbance. As a professional I feel the choice lies with the individual whether they want to go ahead with these procedures or not. Our role is to educate them thoroughly about their options, the effects that may ensue, coping with a changed self image, offer support and fostering states of acceptance. Since these procedures lead to irreversible changes in the body one must take an informed and aware decision.
