A filling is limited to outer layers of the tooth. A root canal involves the inner layers. A crown is  generally advised.

Filling is done when the decay is small and  affecting only enamel and dentin portion of tooth. only the decayed portion is removed and replaced by a filling. When the decay has reached the pulp then root canal is recommended in which even the root portion gets filled.

Hello sir, when the decay of tooth doesn't involve the pulp it can be saved by a filling(Rs 500 onwards). But if the decay has already involved pulp and you are experiencing pain you need to get a root canal treatment(3500 onwards) to save the tooth. After root canal the a crown(3500 onwards) is placed to prevent any future damage to your tooth.
