Hi Night grinding habit can be gradually reduced by wearing night guard . Long time grinding will lead to TMJ problems and wearing of your enamel which will give sensitivity and pain. Regular monthly review should be needed.

Yes night guards protect your teeth from grinding habits but it is equally important to find the reason for night grinding and sort it out.  Improper alignment of teeth, improper chewing forces, problems in jaw joint, stress can all lead to grinding habits.  Kindly visit an orthodontist (braces specialist)and get checked.

It is important to ascertain the cause of pain before using a night guard. It may surely reduce the effect of grinding on your teeth but that wouldn’t be the ultimate solution. There is generally an underlying cause to the grinding that needs to be addressed. Grinding also causes the teeth to flatten which may result in pain in the jaws. A proper examination would help to ascertain the necessary treatment
