My mother’s age is 73 yrs with osteoarthritis stage 4.But there’s no pain or swelling. Is it possible? Xray indicates completely wornout knee bones lying on one another.Doctor suggested that she doesn’t need knee replacement till she complains of pain but he told that both the knees are damaged. If complains of pain at the age of 75 and above what to do?

Try intrarticular injections first. If pain does not improve with injections and exercises then TKR for sure. Wait till symptoms delevop for a TKR. But exercises should be started now.

Your doctor is right. Doesn’t matter what the X-rays say. If she’s painless, no need for surgery. There’s no upper limit for age for a knee replacement. She can get one even at 85
