Its most probably due to nerve compression in the lower back area because of disc bulge leading to the pain in the leg specially at the back side of leg(called as sciatica).
Next Steps
go for physitherapy..ultrasonic therapy for healing, tens for muscle relaxation and heat therapy for reducing inflammation may required . take rest. then the exercises are to be done and very much important.
Health Tips
For back-at home.bed rest for seven days+hot water fomentation+application of pain killer gel..avoid forward bending, weight lifting, cold exposure , stair climbing.long travelling or driving, no prolonged standing/walking/sitting.

Hello there Well your mother definately needs to undergo an Xray/mri of her lower back,,,usually the problem arises due to reduced disc space or muscle tightness around the back....how ever if she has pain and tingling in her leg then even nerve root irritation could be suspected...hence a visit to orthopedician/musculoskeletal physiotherapist would be benificial.
Next Steps
if possible get X-ray in AP & Lat position of lumbar spine, and do normal blood test along with sr calcium,sr uric acid & B12 levels for you mother before the visit for a clear picture.
Health Tips
avoid lifting weights and long travels.

In my opinion start her physiotherapy sessions immediately in that she must have IFT / hot pack / US / Laser therapy with no exercises in the initial phase after pain subsides the physiotherapist must start with basic extension exs of the spine...side by side she can go for few blood tests like calciumvitamin d vitamin b 12 and uric acid and hba1c...if they are deranged then she has to take supplement medications for that...get well soon and take care...
Next Steps
Visit a physiotherapist immediately
Health Tips
Ask her Not to bend forward or twist side ways Not to lift heavy weights Not to check her pain Not to sit or stand for long Do not sit for more than 30 mins
