It is not recommended to give medical advice based on such limited history and information. As a general rule tapering is done over days to weeks depending on the purpose of prescribing and the patients history. But medical advice is highly specific to the patient. Also note Ativan is a regulated/controlled drug due to its safety profile, abuse potential and risks and side effects both while taking the medicine and when stopping suddenly after regular intake . It cannot /should not be  procured without a prescription.  Kindly contact your prescribing doctor or take a second opinion for a personalized opinion.

Currently you can stop it at once, but it's not a good option to keep it for SOS basis because ultimately you will end up taking it as and when needed and then the dosing may not remain as SOS.Consult a doctor and rule out any underlying physical/psychological conditions

To taper off start by reducing dose to 0.5 for 1st 5 days. And after that you can stop and take it on SOS, if needed. Please do make sure not to take sleeping pills frequently and rather consult a psychiatrist to treat the under lying issue.
