High TSH level, Excessive weight gain

2024-10-16 19:26:40
I am facing unexpected weight gain, laziness, brain fog, irregular periods and hairfall. My TSH is 13 which is very high. Even if I have a controlled diet, I am unable to lose weight and none of my symptoms are improved even after bringing in a changed lifestyle. I take 75mcg thyroid medicines. What should I do?

Your symptoms including weight gain could be related to uncontrolled hypothyroidism, even if you are taking thyroid replacement hormone.Simply the present dose may not be adequate. You may need a dose adjustment under the supervision of your physician.

It seems that you have a high TSH level of 13, which indicates underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). This can contribute to symptoms like weight gain, fatigue, brain fog, irregular periods, and hair fall. Your current dose of 75 mcg of thyroid medication might need adjustment, as your symptoms suggest that the hormone levels are not yet balanced. Here are a few suggestions for managing your condition: 1. Follow Up with Thyroid Tests: It might be time to reassess your thyroid function tests, including Free T3, Free T4, and repeat TSH, to determine if your medication dose is adequate. 2. Diet & Nutrition: Continue with a balanced diet that includes enough iodine, selenium, and zinc, as they support thyroid function. Consider consulting a dietitian who can guide you on a thyroid-friendly diet. 3. Adjust Medication: Sometimes, a slight increase in the thyroid hormone dose is needed to bring TSH to the desired range. Speak with your doctor about whether a dose adjustment might be necessary. 4. Lifestyle: Regular exercise, even low-impact activities like walking or yoga, can help manage weight and improve energy levels. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule is also crucial for overall well-being. For a more personalized evaluation and treatment plan, I recommend that you consult me directly.
