When is scaling necessary? Is it okay to have a scaling procedure once a year. I think this way I get a checkup done as well when I visit the dentist.

You should get Scaling and polishing done every 6 months to a year. Also following general oral hygeine instructions such as Brushing twice daily,Rinsing after every meal,Flossing your teeth avoids further dental related issues.
