Opinion: Ranitidine was indeed withdrawn from the market in the United States in 2020 due to concerns about the presence of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a potential carcinogen. However, it's possible that your gastroenterologist has prescribed an alternative medication that is safe and effective. Next steps: 1. Contact your doctor: Reach out to your gastroenterologist to clarify the prescription and discuss any concerns you have about taking ranitidine. It's important to get confirmation on whether the prescribed medication is an alternative to ranitidine or a different formulation. 2. Consider alternatives: If you have concerns about ranitidine, ask your doctor about other medications that can be used to manage your symptoms, such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or H2 receptor antagonists that are not associated with NDMA contamination. 3. Follow medical advice: Make sure to follow your doctor's instructions and take the prescribed medication as directed until you have had a chance to discuss your concerns. Please feel free to schedule a follow-up appointment with me to review your treatment plan and ensure your concerns are addressed. Your health and safety are our top priorities.
