Chronic constipation in a long-standing diabetic can occur due to reduced gut motility (diabetic autonomic neuropathy), hormonal factors, or medications, even if exercise and fruit intake are adequate. Age-related bowel changes can also contribute
Next Steps
Review her diet in detail (fiber and water intake), medications, and blood sugar control. She should consult a doctor for evaluation and may need fiber supplements, osmotic laxatives, or tests such as thyroid profile if symptoms are worsening.
Health Tips
Ensure adequate water intake (not just fruits), fixed toilet timing after meals, and avoid frequent use of stimulant laxatives. Seek medical advice if there is weight loss, blood in stools, severe pain, or recent change in bowel habits.

In long-standing diabetes, constipation can happen even if exercise and fruits are taken regularly. Diabetes can slowly affect bowel movement, making the intestine work slower. Age, low water intake, and diet timing also play a role. How you can help her (without medicines): • Water is key: ensure 2.5–3 liters spread through the day (unless fluid-restricted) • Vegetables matter more than fruits for constipation: • Lauki, tori, pumpkin, spinach, carrot, beetroot (daily) • Soaked foods (morning): • 2 soaked figs or 5–6 soaked raisins • Fiber with timing: • Fruits are better in daytime, not late night • Healthy fats: • 1–2 tsp ghee in meals helps bowel movement • Routine: • Encourage toilet at the same time daily, without force • Stress & sleep also affect bowels—ensure proper rest If constipation is worsening despite all this, it may need specific evaluation related to diabetes-related gut slowing and personalized management. Chronic long term constipation can be very difficult to treat. Please try the following, 1. Isabgol powder 2. Dulcoflex tablet 3. Movicol packet (these are very costly and try this only if option 1+2 haven’t worked). 4. Only if you haven’t already done blood tests- CBP, TSH, Calcium **Avoid the new medications called 5-HT mediators. We are learning various serious issues with these** All the best. J G S R clinic
