Allergic Reaction After Dog Bite (ARV)

2025-12-15 05:35:14
On 13th Dec at around 3 PM, I had a dog bite. At 4 PM, I received anti-rabies vaccine (both shoulders) and a tetanus injection. At 5 PM, ERIG was injected locally at the bite site. At 11 PM, I took Clavam 625 mg. Around 3 AM, I developed severe stomach pain, loose motions, and intense nausea. At 11 AM, I was given Ondem and Drotin Plus injections. Within 30 minutes, I developed generalized allergic rashes all over my body (images attached). At 4 PM, I took XL-Mount, which reduced the symptoms, but mild redness persists. Does this allergic reaction or antihistamine intake affect the efficacy of the anti-rabies vaccine? Does this allergic reaction or antihistamine intake affect the efficacy of the anti-rabies vaccine? I have taken anti-vomiting and abdominal pain injections many times in the past, but never had such a reaction before. Why could this have happened now? Is this due to Anti Rabies Vaccine ?

Hello, I am Dr. Romain Rajan, General Physician, and your case has been allotted to me. Short answer: No. This allergic reaction and the antihistamine do NOT affect the efficacy of the anti-rabies vaccine. Your rabies protection remains intact. The reaction is unlikely due to the anti-rabies vaccine. It is more consistent with a drug-related reaction (Ondansetron/Drotaverine or antibiotic), which can occur even if you’ve tolerated these medicines before. What to do: • Continue the anti-rabies vaccine schedule as advised • Avoid the suspected drugs and inform your doctor • Use antihistamine if needed Seek urgent care if there is breathlessness, facial swelling, or worsening rash. For a one-to-one consultation, you may reach out to me on 85271646 seven seven.

This allergic reaction is most likely a drug-related hypersensitivity reaction and not due to the anti-rabies vaccine or ERIG. Anti-rabies vaccines and ERIG are inactivated and purified preparations and are not affected by allergic reactions elsewhere in the body. Also, taking antihistamines like XL-Mont does not reduce or interfere with the effectiveness of the anti-rabies vaccine in any way. Your rabies protection remains fully intact. The timing and pattern of symptoms suggest that the reaction was more likely triggered by one of the medications, especially Clavam (amoxicillin-clavulanate) or the Ondem/Drotin Plus injections, which are known to occasionally cause delayed allergic reactions, even if they were tolerated in the past. Allergic reactions can develop suddenly at any point in life, even to medicines previously taken safely. The generalized itchy rashes appearing within 30–60 minutes of injection strongly point toward a drug-induced urticarial reaction. The good response to antihistamine confirms this was an allergic reaction. Mild residual redness may persist for 24–72 hours and usually settles on its own. There is no need to repeat or restart rabies vaccination, and no dose has been neutralized or lost. Continue the remaining rabies vaccine doses as per schedule.
Next Steps
For now, avoid Clavam and inform future doctors about this reaction. If itching persists, a non-sedating antihistamine once daily for a few days is sufficient.
Health Tips
Seek urgent care if there is facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or throat tightness, which are rare but serious signs.

This is urticaria. Possibly a reaction to one of the medicines, probably Clavum. Keep this recorded with you and avoid taking Clavum in future until extremely necessary.

No, the allergic reaction will not affect the vaccine efficacy. The reaction most likely seems to be due to clavam or Drotin
