Hello. The wisdom tooth erupts at the age of 18-21 years of age. At times, when there is no sufficient space in the oral cavity, or due to the eruptional forces acting on the tooth, the tooth does not erupt and remains completely or partially impacted. Such a tooth needs to be extracted/removed.
You will require an OPG (full mouth x-ray) to determine the position of the tooth.
A completely or partially impacted 3rd molar, if not treated, causes complications like pain, cheek bite, improper oral hygiene, cavity to the adjacent tooth, pericoronitis (severe pain, inflammation, swelling in the gums of that region), radiating pain to the neck, ears, cheek, throat and headache.
