There are two types of immunotherapy, Subcutaneous Immunotherapy (ScIT) and Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT). In the older ScIT therapy, patient is given biweekly Subcutaneous injections of the antigen over a period of 3-5 years. Drawback is that it is painful, cumbersome, costly(has to be done by a trained nurse or doctor or immunotherapy technician). The newer SLIT therapy is in the form of drops instilled under the tongue in daily doses over 3-5 years. It is painless, safe and relatively cheaper as it can be done by the patient alone.
Next Steps
If you are interested in undergoing SLIT therapy for your allergic rhinitis, do drop in to my clinic Healthcare@Basaveshwaranagar for an Allergy Skin Prick Test to map your unique allergy profile so that a unique antigen contain can be made for you.
