Hello i asked a question earlier about quitting zolpidem but i have been getting contrasting answers. My psychiatrist said that the drug does not lead to dependence as my dose is low(5mg). I have taken zolpidem for 46 days where only 28 days i have taken full dose.
Since last week i have had to take full dose because i don't fall asleep with 2.5mg. So i take 2.5 mg at 4 am which causes drowsiness next day. Yesterday i took 2.5mg and fell asleep. Do i really need to taper this drug over long period?.

No u can abruptly stop it as well . But some people might have difficulty sleeping, hence we suggest tapering it. I can take half a tab for few days and then stop it.
Firstly, Zolpidem is an addictive medication.
However, if taken for short durations (3 to 6 weeks), its addiction potential may be minimal and one can wean oneself off it.
I think the bigger question may be why you suffer from sleep disturbance, and if meds are the only solution.
Next Steps
Without knowledge of your full history, it may be difficult to suggest alternatives to Zolpidem, but do consider non-medicinal options, including sleep hygiene.
Health Tips
Whilst meds have a role, resorting to meds as the only option, can be tricky. All meds have side effects, and a good treatment plan should include various facets, including addressing social stressors, and lifestyle modifications.

Zolpidem helps with sleep initiation, so should be taken at night 9 pm
It does cause some early morning sedation / grogginess
Dependency with Z group drugs are low but not nil
As you are continuing to have sleep issues, kindly continue the meds - 5 mg at 9 pm
