Acute Pancreatitis with Renal Failure
My father had acute Pancreatitis last week and it impacted his kidneys. His Creatinine levels are increasing on days when there is no Dialysis done. His Pancreatitis is settling but the Creatinine levels are not improving. Doctors are not able to locate the infection source as he is normal with no temperature. He was although diagnosed with Pneumonia too 2 weeks back. Can you suggest why the Creatinine levels are not settling

What was ur fathers creatinine level before the pancreatitis episode. Need to rule out plain Acute injury or Acute injury on background of Chronic Kidney disease. Without knowing the complete picture it’s difficult to determine what is preventing his kidneys to recover

First of all, raised creatinine doesn’t always meaning there is an infection. Here raised creatinine indicates damages to both kidneys only. In your father’s case damage may be caused by three possibilities.
1. First acute damage to kidneys caused by severe acute pancreatitis which we call AKI in medical term.
2. Second possibility is that he has prior chronic damage to kidney which is being detected during this admission.
3. Third possibility is combination of both acute and chronic damage.
Regarding outcomes, acute damage might recover in 2-4 weeks, but that’s not guaranteed. Chronic damage almost never recovers.
