A query regarding Snoring

Hai Dr, My father is 53 years old. He snores while sleeping. Is snoring something dangerous or is it a alert of some other disease. What can be it's common reason? When I listen to it I feels like it's coming from the heart but his cholesterol levels are normal. Could you help me please. Early times rarely he used cigarettes. Is it becuase of that?
