Deworming & itching query (2.5yo, 11kg)
Hello Doctor, my 2.5-year-old son (weight: 11 kg) was last dewormed about a year ago. Recently, he has been frequently complaining of itching in his bottom area, particularly in the evenings and at night. We also have a minor concern regarding his weight. Could you please advise if deworming is recommended at this stage? If yes, please guide us on the appropriate medicine, exact dosage according to his weight, and whether a repeat dose after 2 weeks is needed. Thank you.

Evening and night-time itching around the bottom in a 2.5-year-old is classic pinworm (threadworm), and yes he is due for deworming since it has been a year. At 11 kg the usual choice is albendazole 400 mg as a single dose (chewable/suspension), repeated once after 2 weeks because these worms reinfect from eggs. Treat everyone at home on the same day - that is the step families usually skip and then the itching returns. Cut his nails short, hot-wash bedding and inner wear, and get him to wash hands after using the toilet. Poor weight gain in this setting is often worm-related and usually picks up after treatment, but if it doesn't, get haemoglobin and a stool test done. Do confirm the dose with your paediatrician or ask me on a Practo consult and I'll write it out with his weight properly accounted for.
