I was recovering from a ligament tear on the knee. 45 days of immobility, and then slow physiotherapy to bring back the strength of the knee. All this went on for 2.5 months. Even though the physiother I was recovering from a ligament tear on the knee. 45 days of immobility, and then slow physiotherapy to bring back the strength of the knee. All this went on for 2.5 months. Even though the physiotherapy showed good improvement, there was still a lingering pain in the knee and after a certain point, the bending angle of the knee stopped improving. I noticed a softness on a small swollen part of the knee, but the physiotherapist said that it’ll go by itself. This pocket was filled with blood was not really painful to touch, but it seemed like the only visible blocker for improvement in bending of the knee. I was doing a bit of research online and I found that Leech Therapy is what could help resolve blood swelling issues. So I started my hunt for a good Leech Therapist, and I found Dr. Tanveer Ahmed.

Here’s something about Dr. Tanveer – he looks pretty intimidating with 6+ feet of height, and a well-built body. If you see him outside his clinic, you’d probably never believe that he is a doctor. He also possesses a lot of courage to veer into a field of medicine which is not just ancient, but also pretty rare in India – Cupping & Hijama Therapy alongside Leech Therapy. All this said and done, when you visit his clinic, any and all inhibitions will vanish. Ancient Treatment does not equal to Ancient looking clinic. Dr. Tanveer has a very modern setup, which is clean, hygienic and has colours that will soothe your senses. He uses all measures possible to maintain the hygiene of all his treatments, and advises the same to patients.

When I went in for the first consultation, he didn’t need more than 5 mins to understand the exact problem – that is the kind of experience that he comes with. He explained to me how this happens – swelling happens in parts of the body where a bone or a muscle has been broken or ruptured. The blood fills up there automatically to cushion the injury and does not flow through. This stored blood becomes stagnant over a period of time, and the lack of flow of blood in the area begins to cause a lot of pain when the injury is healed. With flow of time, the blood would very slowly creep back into the system, but patience is something that we all lack when it comes to getting rid of a bodily pain. Dr. Tanveer explained how the leech therapy helps – the leech will be attached to the bulge in the skin, then it would suck out all the stagnant blood, thereby restoring normal blood flow. How much would it pain? Just as much as a small pin prick. He suggested I get cupping also done to open up the blood vessels around the swelling.

While leech therapy is direct and simple to understand, cupping is slightly different. From all the pics that you find online, you’ll probably never be able to understand the process or the benefits of cupping. In the process of cupping, a series of miniscule cuts are made on the skin going just deep enough to slightly cut a blood vessel. After these cuts are done, a cup is placed on top of the area, and air is pulled out like a small vacuum pump. This creates pressure inside the cup which starts to pull out blood from the cuts. How does this help? The blood vessels around stagnant blood sometimes have impure blood and don’t have a regulated flow, hence, to restore the blood flow back to normal, both cupping and leech therapy need to be done at the same time.

Once I was done with both procedures, Dr. Tanveer bandaged it and asked me to avoid a few specific food items. Within a week of the procedure, the pain was reduced by 95%!! I was walking again without any pain, and in another week, the swelling was completely gone, and my knee had come back to its natural shape. What physiotherapy could not do in 2 months, leech and cupping therapy did in 2 weeks. This is what I call “amazing pain management”!!

Thank You Dr. Tanveer for helping me get rid of the painful swelling and also fixing the knee in just one sitting!! For you, patients, it’ll be a good idea if you inquire with the Doctor and learn about the treatment in detail before dismissing it as ancient, orthodox, or even painful.
