Hair transplant is normally referred for treating the bald pattern in male members. This procedure can also be used to restore eyelashes, eyebrows, beard hair, and pubic hair and also to fill in the scars caused by surgeries or accidents.

Indications for getting a hair transplant

Balding is a major concern which hampers the confidence of men. Hair transplant is considered the best available option to overcome this situation as it helps in restoring the hair at the bald area of the head through surgery. Although there are some non-surgical options also available, there is no certainty that the individual might get the desired result. However, hair transplant gives assurance as well as the desired result to the individual by balancing the quantity of hair.

Stages of male baldness pattern:

Male pattern baldness usually occurs in a particular pattern or shape from which the need for a hair transplant can be detected. According to the Norwood scale pattern, there are seven stages of male pattern baldness:

Stage 1: This is the starting or initial stage, in which there is negligible hair loss on the crown area of the head or at the hairline

Stage 2: In this stage, the hairline begins to recede just above the upper brow crease on the forehead. Although the hair loss is very mild at this stage the progression starts to show up with the formation of an M-shape on the crown area of the head.

Stage 3: In this stage, the baldness becomes quite evident which involves the receding of hairline in a particular fashion. Spots can be marked on the head where the hair is missing at this stage.

Stage 4: the Fourth stage is considered when the hair fall starts to deepen at the front of the forehead in the temple area, making the hair loss more prominent at the crown.

Stage 5: In this stage, there is severe hair loss with the separation between the loss of hair at the hairline and the crown area. The strip of hair between the two areas starts getting thinner and narrower with the progress of hair loss.

Stage 6: The sixth stage marks most of the hair from the crown area completely lost with only limited strands of hair left.

Stage 7: This is the last stage of male pattern baldness which leaves the remaining hair on the backside of the scalp, as the hair in that area is generally denser than the other areas. For some, this stage can mean complete baldness as well.

There are several doctors available for hair transplant in Delhi who guide with expert advice, always striving for excellence with a patient-oriented approach.

Causes of male pattern baldness:

Heredity or Family history - This is the most common reason for hair loss which occurs gradually with age and in predictable patterns.

Medical conditions - Situations like alopecia, infections like ringworm and hair-pulling disorder called trichotillomania can lead to hair loss.

Hormonal changes - Certain changes in the level of hormones can also contribute to the loss of hair.

Supplements or Medications - Side effects of certain medicines given for medical conditions like cancer, arthritis, depression, heart problems, gout, and high blood pressure can cause hair loss.

Radiation therapy - The growth of hair might not be the same after any such therapy to the head, thus gradually leading to baldness.

Stress - It can be counted as one of the major reasons for hair loss.

Lifestyles or treatments - Use of chemicals for the styling of hair or various treatments used on hair can also be a reason contributing to hair loss.

Eligibility Criteria

There are certain points which should be considered and discussed with the respective doctor while opting for hair transplant. These are:

Quality of hair - The quality of hair refers to whether your hair is thick enough for transplantation as it becomes quite difficult for those with thin hair.

Texture of hair – The texture of the hair is also important to be considered while opting for hair transplant. If you have curly hair, the coverage will be better as compared to straight hair.

Flexible scalp - The flexibility of scalp will help the surgeon in putting more follicles leading to a better result, whereas things become little difficult in a rigid scalp.

Healthy scalp - In case of alopecia, the transplanted hair might fall. If the scalp is dry or has any kind of infection, then the process becomes quite risky.

Monetary issue - Hair transplant is an expensive procedure so you need to have sufficient funds to go for it.

The follow-up process and postoperative medications are also slightly on the expensive side. There are plenty of options for hair transplant in Delhi that guarantees the desired result while charging the minimum required amount for assuring the best treatment.

When Am I not a suitable candidate for hair transplant?

  1. If you don’t have enough donor hair sites to remove hair for transplant
  2. If hair loss is due to any specific medication like chemotherapy
  3. If you are diagnosed with stage six and seven on Norwood scale
  4. If your scalp is stiff
  5. If you are diagnosed with alopecia

Types of Hair transplant surgeries

There are several techniques for harvesting hair follicles, which comes with its own share of advantages and disadvantages. The two main ways of hair transplant in which donor grafts are extracted are Strip Harvesting and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). Hair transplant in Delhi is offered by multiple expert centers that explain to patients every detail of the surgery. They also work toward boosting the morale of the patient as one suffering from baldness often also suffers from a lack of confidence in life.

Strip Harvesting

It is the most common method used for removing hair follicles from the donor site. A strip of skin is harvested from the posterior scalp that is the area with good hair growth. The surgeon uses a single, double or triple based scalpel to remove the strips of hair-bearing tissue. The strip is around 1-1.5X15-30 cm in size. The individual follicular unit grafts, which are small naturally formed groups of hair follicles, are dissected from the strip. Excess fibrous and fatty tissues are removed to avoid any damage to the follicular cells. The surgeon then punctures the sites to receive the grafts with fine needles and places them in the required density and pattern. The final part is performed by inserting the individual grafts at their place. This procedure might leave a thin linear scar in the donor area. The recovery period for strip harvesting is almost two weeks along with the removal of stitches or staples.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

This procedure is more time consuming than strip harvesting as it takes place in a single long session or multiple small sessions. In Follicular Unit Extraction, individual follicular units with 1-4 hair are removed, which is usually tiny punches between 0.6mm and 1 mm in diameter. The patient is given local anesthesia for FUE harvesting. This process can either be of few hours for extracting 200 grafts for scar correction or can be for days for a mega session of 2500 to 3000 grafts. The surgeon uses small micro blades or needles to puncture the sites for placing the grafts in proper density and pattern, which is followed by the final part of inserting the individual grafts in place. The result after FUE is usually natural as it does not need large areas of scalp tissue for harvesting and thus there is no linear scar on the head. The recovery time is less than a week. The only disadvantage of FUE is increased surgical time and high cost.

Some of the other methods used for hair transplant are characterized on the basis of equipment used. They can be named as:

Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT)

This method involves the extraction of a linear strip of hair-bearing skin from the back or side of the scalp, which is further dissected in separate individual grafts.

Robotic Hair Restoration

In this procedure, cameras and robotic arms are used to assist the surgeon in the hair transplant process. Although this process makes things easy for the surgeon, it comes with certain disadvantages like the relatively large size of punches and higher cost because of the devices used.

All of the above mentioned advanced surgical procedures are offered in hospitals for hair transplant in Delhi.

Pre-operative assessment and planning

There is a set of instructions which needs to be followed religiously before an operation. The pre-operative instructions for hair transplant include:

  1. Checking up on any previous medical or surgical history.
  2. Thorough physical examination of the patient along with the donor site.
  3. Transparent discussions regarding the expectations of the patient and the result.
  4. Complete paperwork including the sign on the consent form.
  5. Diagnostics as per the recommendation of the doctor.
  6. Informing the doctor regarding the use of alcohol, smoke or any other type of substance abuse, so that it can be restricted at the right time.
  7. Accepting and following all the instructions provided by the doctor.

Post-operative guidelines and care

To avoid any medical complication, certain preventive measures need to be taken after the hair transplant. Some of these include:

  1. Complete course of antibiotic should be taken to avoid any kind of infection.
  2. The area treated should be guarded against direct sunlight.
  3. Proper dressing of wound on a daily basis to allow seepage of blood and tissue fluid.
  4. Cleaning of the area for prevention from the formation of scabs. However, the use of shampoo should be on the recommendation of the doctor only.

Side-effects

The side effects of hair transplant are usually temporary and subside in a few weeks. Some of them are bleeding, pain, numbness or lack of sensation on the treated area, infection, swelling of scalp, itching, bruising around eyes, unnatural tufts of hair, inflammation of the hair follicles and formation of a crust on the area where treatment is done.

Hair transplant in Delhi is offered by experts who explain to the patients in details about the potential side-effects of hair transplant procedure.

Alternatives for hair transplant

  1. Medical treatments - Medicines like Propecia and topical solution like Rogaine help in the re-growth of hair and stop hair loss.
  2. Shampoos - Shampoo containing Biotin (to strengthen follicle), keratin (for hair strength & follicle flexibility), DHT blockers, zinc, and Minoxidil prevent hair loss.
  3. Laser Therapy - This technique increases hair shaft thickness.
  4. Natural Cures - Healthy diet with proper nutrients, applying coconut milk on the scalp, avoiding stress & use of chemicals and scalp rub can help in increasing the volume of hair and prevent hair loss.
  5. Cosmetic Cover-ups - Some of them include wigs, hairpiece, sprays to mimic the appearance of hair and Fibres designed to attach on the remaining strands of hair.
  6. Use of hair growth tonics.
