An improper eruption of wisdom tooth, unsure whether I need to get the tooth extracted or the problem can be fixed without the need for an extraction. Food is getting lodged between the tooth and the gum surrounding the tooth.

To assess the situation first step is an x ray which would tell the position of the tooth and the clinical examination. Most probably in your situation it should be removed as the food lodgement problem could not be solved without removing it.It can cause swelling in the gum around and also decay in the adjacent tooth. It usually doesnt play an important part in mastication so its removal wont cause any problem.
