CRP increases after any infection..bacterial, viral, fungal or even chronic inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. It is not specific for mucormycosis (black fungus)
It is just a marker to assess level of inflammation. And to monitor response to treatment.
Blood culture can detect mucormycosis. However for a blood culture report to come positive it means that the infection is very severe.
To accurately diagnose mucormycosis, one needs a microscopy report of samples obtained from the nose/eye/mouth or any affected part.
Mucormycosis can be suspected clinically, or on MRI but confirmation is by microscopy.
