Why is it paining in left side under ribs?

I am engaged recently, I have noticed that her father often complains of pain under his ribs. This pain is on the left side near his heart. His age is 57 years, breathing is normal, his blood pressure also remains normal. He has acidity problem. Why there is this pain in his left side under the ribs?
