Very much helpful. It helps in removing dead tissues from bed sores effectively. Reduces need for repeated surgical debridement. Faster healing..but should be combined with antibiotic therapy if infected
In your mother's case, since bone is exposed, you will have to do an x-ray of foot to see if bone is not affected. If bone is affected, treatment is different. If not, several studies have showed improved and faster healing with VAC. In my experience also VAC has faster healing rates. Other advantage is that daily dressing can be avoided. VAC needs to be changed once in five days only.
Disadvantage is that unless you have a suction pump at home, you will need hospital stay .
Next Steps
Blood sugar should be kept under control.
culture from wound done to know which type of bacteria and will respond to which antibiotic
Health Tips
pressure over the wound site should be avoided at any cost for healing
avoid walking as much as possible, other option is to put a lower leg cast with a window over the wound for regular dressing
It's for chronic non healing wounds. It promotes wound healing and keeps the wound clean at the same time in most of the cases. Usually it's required for 2-3 weeks may be more depending upon the response. But you should consult a surgeon before going for it.
