After his one month he had developed umbilical hernia. its was small in the beginning but gradually increased till now. he is top feeding. he has gas problem and he is straining excessively and making sounds while passing gas and when he is sleepy. these days his straining has increased quite a lot specially in the morning. will this sexcessive straining increase the hernia further more? i am very concerned about whether the hernia will increase because of straining. is there any remedy which can decrease his straining habit?please reply.

Umbilical hernia resolves on it's own by 1 year of age in most cases. Only when it doesn't resolve or increases in size by 3-4 years, after 1to 2 ,it needs surgery ,or in case it gets strangulated( which is rare) i.e. it does not reduce when pressed ,shows discolouration and baby has constipation and vomiting. Meanwhile ,try to resume breast feeding and for excessive flatulence you can give neopeptine drops 0.5 ml ,thrice daily
Umbilical hernia usually closes on it's own when he grows up.
Till then keep checking whether the hernia goes in when pressed.
Straining will not increase it
Next Steps
only if the swelling does not go in on pressing then you need to see a pediatrician/Surgeon
Wait till 1year of age
The size will decrease to great extent and might subside completely in about half of cases
If not subsides by one year needs surgery
Increase in size on crying and straining is normal with decrease in size while child is comfortable or sleeping
In case colour change at umbilical hernia with pain and vomiting repeatedly you need to consult doctor immediately (this risk is very very less with umbilical hernia but you need to keep in mind)
