Hi. The severity of the pus and location of tooth is critical in deciding the treatment plan. In most cases, the swelling is reduced by antibiotic cover so as to make anaesthesia to site more effective. However, sometimes, time is of essence and waiting for the pus to be managed by antibiotic alone in critical cases like lower molars may not be  advised. We look to drain the pus by opening the canal so that antibiotic is more effective. Also if we can achieve anaesthesia by nerve block, then tooth can be extracted.
Next Steps
Please state the location of tooth and the severity of pus. incision and drainage (opening of Root canal) to release pus always helps in pain relief and management of swelling.
Health Tips
Please do take full course of antibiotics in proper potency as advised by your dentist.
