Tibia and Fibula Fracture
I met with an accident and had tibia and fibula Fracture (open Fracture). For reducing the risk of infection, doctor fixed Fracture with external fixation and removed it after wound healed. 1 month later inserted IM nail. Now it's 15th week after 2nd surgery (IM nail) and i am walking with elbow crutch. I have attached x-ray of post surgery and as on 13th week. Pls advice 1. Is it healing normally? 2. Is it safe to travel everyday to the office? 3. Is there a risk of non union or infection? 4. When I walk without any support?. Pls advice I m panic since healing delayed.. thanks

1.I could see the fracture is healing well in the second xray 2.It is safe for you to travel in a car and walking with elbow crutches with weight bearing as tolerated by you. It is better to avoid stairs. It is better that you dont stand for more that 15 mins continously and take intermittent breaks by sitting and keeping your leg up 3.In any open fracture, there is a risk of infection. But I dont think you would be having any signs of infection like pain, swelling, redness, warmth at fracture site based on your xrays 4.You can slow wean off your crutches like the following. Double crutches - 2 weeks Single crutch - in opposite hand - 2 weeks Single crutch only outdoors - 2 weeks Walk without support
