When to Get a Tetanus Booster
Every 10 years: Adults should receive a tetanus booster (Td or Tdap) every 10 years.
After injuries: A tetanus shot may be needed if you have a deep wound or puncture injury and it’s been more than 5 years since your last booster.
Next Steps
If fully vaccinated and recent boosters:
If you’ve had a tetanus booster within the last 5 years, you're protected even if you get a wound. No additional shot is needed.
For high-risk wounds:
High-risk wounds include deep cuts, punctures, or wounds contaminated with dirt or rust.
Even in such cases, since you've had two TT shots this year, you're still protected and don't need another booster.
Health Tips
What You Can Do Instead:
Clean the wound thoroughly: Wash with soap and water to reduce the risk of infection.
Apply antiseptic: Use an antiseptic like betadine or hydrogen peroxide.
Monitor the wound: Watch for signs of infection (redness, swelling, pus, or pain).
