For diabetes it is advisable to do checkups once in 3 months. There is a test called HbA1c. It gives details of blood sugar control over last three months Is your father on insulin treatment - if yes kindly purchase a glucometer if its affordable for u. It allows u to monitor sugar levels at home. If he's on tablets please perform checkups once in 3 months atleast. Once in a year eye checkups are very important. If he's having symptoms like numbness of lower limbs. Consider a workup as the sugar levels are not being controlled by the present medications.
Next Steps
Look out for symptoms Perform necessary checkups Diet modification is necessary Consider mild to moderate exercises on alternate days for atleast 3 days in a week
Health Tips
Consider consulting a diabetologist if he is on Insulin treatment

Regular checkups are required now a days for all and it's good to have done. Your parents required yearly cardiac check up including BSL, LFT and RFT. I personally advice to start Ayurvedic medicine for a healthy life.
