Talking to myself
I have this habit of talking to myself. I go through a past conversation again and generally talk from my perspective but I also imagine the conversation from the other person. Also, I imagine future conversations or episodes where I am talking/speaking/giving a lecture. The conversation has always been logical. I also recognize important aspects and come to important conclusions from those discussions. The only problem is that imagining a conversation is one thing but actually speaking when no one is around is strange. Also, the hand movements that we generally make during conversation is also there. Finally, During the conversation I KNOW and am ALWAYS AWARE that it is IMAGINARY but I fear that In future I might get zoned out or mad. Anyway, this has been happening almost daily since the last 11 years and happens whenever I am alone, about any number of times in a day and anytime during the day. When someone sees me doing this I quickly make an excuse. Please help.

Don't worry you are perfectly normal. Thinking aloud or Soto voice is common and normal. A lot of people recap past conversations and practice a better response and unkowningly enact the conversation. This is also true for a future imagined conversation or fantasy. However, excessive fantasy involvement is not a very healthy practice as it worsens concentration. Besides if people notice you talking to yourself the may think negative about you. A little self discipline and correcting yourself when you engage in this will be all that is required. A similar behavior may be abnormal when people do not realize that this is fantasy. They start living in a Fantasy world. Such people may actually hear voices or see people that are not real but hallucinations. They talk or gesticulate in response to these hallucinations. That is a major mental illness requiring treatment. An active social life and daily exercise are good ways to break the habit of excessive day dreaming. Dr Kiran Shandilya MD
