My sternum is hurting very badly and has a bit of a rash from where I fainted in the hospital last night. I called and asked what had happened and they explained they did a "sternum rub" on me because I was unresponsive. I have ibs and have been known to faint from stomach pain and I'm not sure why this was actually nessecary. Point is, is this level of pain normal after a sternum rub? I've been icing it and taking Tylenol and it still feels very bruised and hurts when I move/breathe.

Greetings, sorry about the pain. It is quite normal to have this pain, perhaps they could have overdone it. Any bruise or strain on sternum will take a month to go. So not to worry, ice it twice a day. Lying is the worst culprit as you turn your sternum gets disturbed and body weight is on it so it is further strained. Lie flat on your back and try to avoid turning sides.
Next Steps
see a physio with knowledge about trigger therapy so that sternum gets relaxed and pain subsides to 40% right away.
