Regulate your breathing. Hold your breath for seven seconds, then exhale for eight seconds. Inhale for four seconds. Then, hold your breath for seven seconds again. Repeat this sequence four times whenever you feel anxious. This will make you feel better immediately. It will also restore normal blood oxygen levels, as we tend to breathe shallowly when we’re anxious. Move your body. When you feel anxious, your heart is sending glucose-rich blood to your muscles. For this reason, it’s better to take a walk or do some push-ups than remain still and try to relax. If you can’t move because you’re in a meeting, ball up and release your toes. Meditate daily. This is the best way to reduce your baseline anxiety level so it stops being a problem for you. This practice will help you feel calm and peaceful most of the time. To meditate properly, select a word or phrase that has positive meaning for you. Say it mentally with your out-breath. When thoughts arise, mentally say, “Oh, well!” and return to your word or phrase. When you feel quiet and peaceful, you can drop your word and enjoy the stillness. If thoughts arise again, return to your word or phrase. Adopt a passive attitude of not trying to control the process. This practice will produce a state of deep relaxation automatically. This relaxed state is deeper than the relaxation achieved in deep sleep. Oxygen consumption declines sharply and becomes lower than in deep sleep. This practice will improve your physical and mental health in countless ways. Meditate once or twice daily for 10–20 minutes.
