Hi, I am Dr. Atul Kumar Nimawat MS ENT Based on your symptoms—voice changes lasting for over 3 months, absence of throat pain or foreign body sensation, but occasional feeling of “air” in the throat—and your history of frequent loud speaking, especially while managing children, it is quite likely that your vocal cords are under strain. Your ENT doctor’s assessment indicating a vocal cord problem is consistent with a common condition known as vocal cord strain or phonotrauma, which can lead to issues like vocal nodules, polyps, or muscle tension dysphonia
Next Steps
Voice Rest: Try to minimize loud talking, shouting, or whispering. Allow your voice adequate rest throughout the day. Hydration: Drink plenty of warm water to keep your vocal cords hydrated. Voice Therapy: If the problem persists, you may be advised to undergo speech therapy with a trained speech-language pathologist. Steam Inhalation: Regular steam inhalation can help soothe your vocal tract. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke, dust, and very cold or spicy foods which may irritate the throat. Follow-up ENT Evaluation: If symptoms continue after the course of medicine, a video laryngoscopy or stroboscopy may be needed to closely examine the vocal cords.
