It can be a symptom of acute infection, either bacterial or fungal. Otoscopic examination will help in determining the nature of the infection. Antibiotics/antifungals will help. And pain killers will help in resolving the infection.

Sometimes it can be due to perichondritis, for which plain pain killers won't suffice.
