Severe diarrhea after taking metformin
Hello dr, Two days ago I checked my blood sugar it was 295 mg/dl (fasting) and 412(after food), so i consulted Diabetologist he told that i am having type 2 diabetes and suggested me RECLIMET and ISTAVEL 50 tablet which I am taking since two days but now I am suffering from severe diarrhea (more than 8- 10 times) and only water is coming in stool I am feeling very weak. Kindly suggest me medicine to stop diarrhea and also suggest what should I do about the above mentioned medicines. Should I need to take Any specific food and fruits kindly suggest.

Please consult the doctor who is treating you for your Diabetes.  I would not have started the treatment for a patient with  blood sugar  295 and 412 mg % as an outdoor case without proper evaluation.

diarrhoea is common side effect of metformin  Consult with your diabetologist .considering your history and symptoms he will either ask you to continue with medicines along with antidiarrheals or will change metformin

Diarrhea associated with metformin is temporary and lasts for upto 2 weeks.You can use imodium  capsules to control the diarrhea.To minimise the side effects, metformin could be taken with meals.You you have not mentioned the HBA1C level.Fresh fruits and vegetables are recommended whereas Fruit juices are not .Avoid fruits like mangoes grapes and pineapple. Drink lots of water , exercise regularly for 30 minutes a day for 5 days in a week.Your fasting glucose goal should be under 130 and post prandial glucose level below 200 preferably 180.
