You can try taking it earlier in the night or during late evenings so the sedative effect of olanzapine wears off by morning.

Thank you for your question. Olanzapine is known to cause sedation and grogginess, especially in the initial weeks of treatment or if taken late at night. Many patients feel "hung over" or dull in the morning due to its long half-life and strong antihistaminergic properties. However, please do not stop or reduce the dose on your own. This can lead to withdrawal effects or a relapse in symptoms.
Next Steps
1. Discuss this side effect with your prescribing psychiatrist. They might: 2. Adjust the timing of the dose (e.g., earlier in the evening), 3. Reduce the dose, or Consider an alternate medication if sedation is significantly affecting your daily function. 4. Keep a daily record of how you feel (energy levels, sleep quality, mood) for a few days before your consultation. It will help guide your doctor’s decision.
Health Tips
a. Avoid activities requiring full alertness (e.g., driving) in the morning if you feel sedated. b. Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol or other sedating substances. c. Do not self-discontinue or skip olanzapine doses abruptly- it may cause rebound symptoms.

Best discussed with your treating psychiatrist. Suddenly discontinuing medication may lead to discontinuation symptoms. Treating psychiatrist can taper it safely.
