If the cavity is near or involving the pulp, then the tooth will require root canal treatment. Better to get an xray done before any treatment.

The cavity will require a filling. The pain may be due to food staying in the cavity. However if the cavity is very deep and has affected the nerve, you may require a root canal in that tooth.
