If the symptoms of schizophrenia are present for more than one year, It is likely that you need to take treatment for a long time, even lifetime. ECT is a measure which will act only temporarily for the symptoms of schizophrenia, like reducing the severity of symptoms when they are uncontrollable by medications. RTMS is also not a permanent solution for schizophrenia and has very little evidence. Antipsychotic treatment for a long time can help in Remission of symptoms and can enable the person to lead a near normal life. Good luck.

ECT is usually indicated in treatment resistant cases. You should consider taking adequate trial of medications at adequate doses for adequate period of time before considering ECT. It may have some effects on memory but it’s usually temporary or for few hours to days after ECT. You may consider TMS if any center provides it. But whatever you decide you should get the treatment from someone who is well experienced in the field. ECT is a good treatment option for relatively faster recovery . You may also consider Long acting injections, that you can take once a month or so.

HI ! ECT for schizophrenia is advised only in severe cases, when rest all treatment options do not work. ECT may cause temporary memory loss in some patients. TMS for Schizophrenia depends on the Psychiatrist and its availability in the set up. Many studies have shown good effects of TMS in Auditory Hallucinations, but not commonly used.

Schizophrenia unfortunately is a chronic illness, it is treatable/ manageable on meds, however it is not curable - meaning you’ll be all better however you’ll have to continue taking treatment long term to prevent relapses that can range from 5 years to lifetime ECT is advised when meds are not effective, it can cause short term memory problems as a side effect - which is reversible The best opinion for your management- meds vs ECT vs rTMS will be decided by your treating psychiatrist, so kindly follow your doctor’s advice
