A lot here depends on what you desire and what is achievable. Your concern, whether good function or aesthetics is an integral deciding factor for surgery. Sometimes desired results cannot be achieved by only orthodontics and hence surgical intervention becomes important. A lot of factors play a role. Your orthodontist and surgeon will be able to explain you better in person.

If the plan of your Orthodontist is surgery, then he is not trying to correct your condition with braces. This phase of treatment is called Presurgical Orthodontics. In this phase all the natural dental compensations masking your skeletal prominence or disturbance are undone . This means your original condition in fact will be worstened for the time being. You need to trust your Orthodontist for judgement & vision; as u definitely would have taken cross opinion before starting the treatment in the first place.

Not easy to comment without reviewing clinically and radiographically. As our practice sees quite a few Orthognathic ( jaw surgery) patients , we feel it is unwise to comment without detailed planning which includes Mock Surgery,Xrays and clinical evaluation !!
Next Steps
Get full evaluation done.If second opinion needed, share photos and xrays at the very least.
Health Tips
Orthognathic surgery that aims for minor changes not necessary many times. major movements of the jaws are often the ones that yield dramatic results
