A friend of mine missed her period and is pregnant. Is it safe to take abortion pills and which pills can she take ? It has been 4 days since her expected date of period passed.

Thank you for your question. Your friend needs to see a gynaecologist to determine which method for abortion is best suited for her. Medication to cause abortion can be given up to 56 days of gestation in a government approved center by a licenced practitioner only. It is dangerous to buy pills from unlicenced sources as there is no one to take responsibility if something goes wrong. It is important to get advice about ongoing effective contraception after the abortion to prevent further unwanted pregnancy as each episode of abortion has it's own set of risks and complications. Please discuss all advantages and disadvantages of the procedure and contraceptives with the doctor performing the procedure. Best wishes
