Hello. This is Dr Rubal Jain.
What's normal for baby poop depends on whether you're breastfeeding or formula-feeding.
If your baby is breastfed, his bowel movements will often be mustard-like in color and consistency. It can sometimes look loose, even watery, and sometimes seedy, mushy or curdy.
If he’s formula-fed, the stool will usually be soft but more formed than a breastfed baby's, and anywhere from pale yellow to yellowish brown, light brown or brownish green.
It is normal for babies to poop while feeding or immediately after feeding.
An average breastfed baby will have about five dirty diapers a day, though anywhere around several per day is usually normal.
If you notice any of the following red flag signs, you must seek consultation:
1. Poop is completely watery
2. Baby is very irritable/ crying inconsolably
3. Baby is limp/dull
4. Fever
5. Rashes
6. Decreased urine output
7. Vomiting
8. Refusal to feed
9. No weight gain
