My mother's pathology report after cholecystectomy says that "Acute on chronic cholecystitis". Can someone please explain what does it mean? Is there anything to worry about?

Hi, your report has long standing inflammation or damage of the cells in gall bladder which can be due to stones in gall bladder or any other cause which is called chronic cholecytitis. Now sudden onset of infection or inflammation happened in the in the back ground of existing chronic cholecytitis. Which is called acute on chronic cholecytitis. This has to be treated with antibiotics and surgery if required. Untreated chronic cholecytitis can lead to gall bladder cancers. So get it treated
