There is a white patch on the floor of my mouth that is paniful only at contact. It was bigger yesterday when it first appeared but it has now become smaller.

Going for the description that you have mentioned it seems you have had a traumatic injury on that area. If it is so it will Heal spontaneously within 7 to 10 days but if it does not then you should contact a dentist to rule out the secondary causes of that white patch.
