Overcoming with grief
This is with regard to my mother. She recently lost her young son (age 33) due to sudden heart attack at his workplace away from our hometown on 4th July 2023. My mother has been continuously crying since that day, even during her sleep. Whenever she is awake she is in tears. She occasionally talks to him as well. Her blood pressure has shooted to 180/90. She does not want to get up and work and has been crying continuously day and night. I am worried about her health. Should I visit a psychiatrist or wait for few days to let her vent her grief? She talks in her sleep as well. I myself am a psychologist so I was not willing to rush to things and let go things naturally on its own. Please suggest me when should be the right time to take her to a psychiatrist.

Ohh! I'm very sad to hear about your loss. Losing a young son isn't an easy thing to deal with. It will take time to accept and process the loss. Help her to vent her emotions and give continuous support, if this persists for more than 6weeks, seek help from a psychiatrist.

Some ways in which you can facilitate your grieving process: Talk about it: Talking about your loss with someone you trust provides insight into how you’re processing your emotions and helps you release the feelings. Allow yourself to feel what you’re feeling: There is no right way to process grief. It is painful but it’s a natural emotional response to any loss. Allow yourself to feel emotions associated with grief without any judgment. Take rest: Grieving can be physically and emotionally exhausting. Your mind and body can be tired which can further decrease your capacity of functioning fully. It’s okay to permit yourself to rest. Take time when making decisions: Grief can take a toll on your ability to think and function. During this time give yourself time to think or reach out to your trusted ones to help you process the decision you would want to make. Get involved in something: Grief can make you feel lonely and you can spend a lot of time thinking and feeling empty. Trying to get involved in online support groups, listening to a motivational podcast or trying a new recipe can help you distract which can further help your mind and body to take a break from the grieving process. Talk to a mental health professional: If your grief feels like too much to overcome, seek professional help. A professional can help you work through your intense emotions and can help you overcome grieving.
