Ongoing rabies vaccine
Hello Doctor, Please read my query carefully. I was previously rabies intradermal ID vaccinated from a government medical 3 months before. Again on re exposure i started vaccination ID again on 23jun 2026. Completed 0,3,7 and one dose left which is on 21st July 2026. But one street cat leaked my wound on 5th July 2026. I can't also check the cat as its a stray street cat. So what will i do now. I am very much confused. And anxiety. Should i restart the vaccine again? Please help me.

1. You took anti rabies 3months back. You will be already having circulating antibodies against rabies in your blood. 2. Again you repeated 0,3.7, doses from 23rd June which again helps you to build antibodies. 3. Lick on non- opened wound is not a risk factor for rabies transmission. You already have 3 levels of protection to prevent rabies from happening. You don't need any further anti-rabies vaccine. Take care

You do not need to restart your rabies vaccine course. You are already in the middle of an active vaccination course (Day 0, 3, 7 completed) which is providing you with rising antibody levels right now — this course covers any new exposure during this period as well. A stray cat licking a wound is a very low-risk exposure (Category II at most); licking does not inject saliva deeply the way a bite does. Since you are already being vaccinated, your body is developing immunity that will handle this. Simply complete your final dose on July 21 as scheduled and do not miss it. There is absolutely no reason to restart — doing so would be unnecessary, wasteful, and would actually disrupt the immune response you have already built. Please take a deep breath — you are protected.
Next Steps
Complete the final dose on July 21 as scheduled. No restart or additional doses needed for the cat licking exposure. If the wound site was deep or heavily contaminated, mention it to your doctor at the time of the last dose. Please consult me directly on Practo for a detailed evaluation.

As per latest protocol for ARV you were to be prescribed only 0 and 3rd day dosing ,(i mean only two injections!). But as you are under ARV treatment currently, so you don't need any ARV vaccination rt now (as it falls under 3 months of re exposure prophylaxis as per goi protocols)

Health Tips
You should always wash the wound with soap and water immediately in such cases,  which may hamper the progress of virus substantially if present.
