Recently it has been reported that long term use may cause kidney damage. Previously they were considered safe for long term use except few animal studies showing tumors in stomach. Now irrespective of other disease like diabetes or hypertension, which themselves damage kidney, PPI should be used with discretion and under doctor's prescription.
